You Deserve A Good Rest

You Deserve A Good Rest

There’s a myth that rest should be simple. That once you turn out the light, your mind will quiet, your body soften, and sleep will come like a gentle tide.

But if you’re a woman, a good night's sleep is often elusive. Studies show women tend to take longer to fall asleep and they need more sleep than men. Sadly, they're also more likely to experience sleep interruptions:

  • Worrying about breakthrough bleeding
  • Troubled by night sweats or body fluids
  • Sleeping lightly— listening for a baby’s breath or a partner’s shift

You're Not Dreaming: You're Exhausted

Study after study confirms what you may already know in your bones: women need more sleep than men. And it's not because we're weak. It's because we’re wired for complexity.

Our brains are deeply relational. We're tracking: how the baby is breathing, how the conversation might have gone better, whether our period will become a flood. Add to that the metabolic shifts of pregnancy, the hormone surges of ovulation, the heat waves of menopause—and it’s no surprise that women need, on average, 20–60 more minutes of sleep per night.

Yet we’re the ones least likely to get it.

According to the Sleep Foundation, more than one in three women experience poor sleep, and nearly 80% report disrupted rest during hormonal phases. But there's more than just hormones at play...

It's Systemic

Deep rest requires feeling safe. If your nervous system thinks it’s in danger, it will be difficult to turn off the sympathetic fight-or-flight state. When your body feels relaxed it drops into the parasympathetic mode— required restoration, dreaming, and healing.

Here are some ways you can set yourself up to sleep better tonight:

1. The 4-7-8 Breath — "Relaxing Breath"

This breathing pattern tells the body it’s safe and invites you to anchor and center in your body temple:

  • Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds

  • Hold your breath for 7 seconds

  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds

Do three to five rounds after you get in bed. This will help slow the heart rate, lower cortisol, and quiet any racing thoughts.

2. Touch Yourself

Place one warm hand gently over your heart and the other over your low belly. Breathe slowly. Focus on the gentle rise and fall of your natural breath. And if you feel a different kind of rise, go for it. Orgasms are a surefire way to help your body to relax.

Both techniques activate the vagus nerve, which governs parasympathetic activity. You may be amazed by how your own touch can feel surprisingly grounding and pleasurable.

3. Low, Slow, Humming

Humming or softly singing also stimulates the vagus nerve via vibration in the throat and chest. It’s why chanting and lullabies help babies go to sleep.

Even just 60 seconds of humming in bed can shift your body into parasympathetic mode. No professional singing experience needed— and double the effect by humming with a partner.

4. Warmth & Weighted Touch

Taking a warm bath or shower (followed by getting into a cozy bed) triggers a parasympathetic shift. So does laying under gentle, evenly distributed weight—like a warm blanket or a lover’s hand. Let the water wash away your worries as you release the day and prepare for a night of renewal. And instead of picking up your phone, rest in the warmth of your lovers' arms.
