The Venus Mat
A Venus Mat is a flat, single-bonded-layer waterproof intimacy mat — not a blanket. Most products in this category are fleece or sherpa blankets that shift during use, bunch, trap body heat, and aren't comfortable to sleep on through the night.
One side of the Venus Mat uses a fractal weave of ultra-fine wicking threads that pull moisture down and away from the surface, like roots drawing water into the earth. The result: liquid gets dispersed and the mat eventually even becomes dry to the touch.
Most waterproof surfaces simply resist liquid, letting it sit on top. Ours actively absorbs it. Our active-dry surface becomes more absorbent with every wash.
Yes. Because the Venus Mat is a flat, breathable single layer — not a blanket — it sleeps comfortably through the night. You won't overheat and it won't shift beneath you. Many customers leave theirs on the bed indefinitely.
Venus Mats are available in a range of designs: Ruby (red velvet), Onyx (black), Emerald (deep green), Aurora (violet-to-deep-purple ombré), Her Majesty (nude or crimson with a royal vulva motif), and Bed of Roses (magenta and lilac florals). The organic cotton line includes Aquamarine and Moonstone. Every mat is reversible.
Yes — and it's the only certified organic cotton sex mat on the market. One side is USA-made organic cotton, impossibly soft against skin and nicely absorbent. The other is our proprietary ultra-wicking active-dry fabric. Two beautiful surfaces in one mat.
Machine wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on low. Do not use enzyme-based detergents, bleach or fabric softeners — these degrade the waterproofing over time. Proper care keeps your mat fully leak-proof for the entire 10-year guarantee period.
Every Venus Mat is guaranteed waterproof for 10 years. This is a real, standing guarantee — not marketing language. We've been honoring it since 2015 and we've never broken it.
Safety & Chemicals
Yes. Venus Mats contain no PFAS, PFOA, or PFOS — the "forever chemicals" found in many conventional waterproofing treatments that accumulate in the body over time.[NIH] Our waterproofing technology is developed and manufactured in the United States to standards we control and stand behind.
When something is this close to your skin — particularly during intimate moments — the chemistry matters. We believe you deserve to know exactly what you're bringing into your bed.
Many conventional waterproofing treatments rely on PFAS compounds — persistent chemicals that don't break down in the body or environment and have been linked to a range of health concerns including hormonal disruption and immune system effects.[EPA]
Venus Matters is explicitly PFAS-free, PFOA-free, and PFOS-free, with American-made waterproofing we verify ourselves. If you're considering any waterproof intimacy product, it's worth asking the brand directly about their waterproofing chemistry. Please know: OEKO-TEX is largely unregulated.
This is an area of growing concern and active research. Some conventional pads and tampons have been found to contain trace amounts of chemicals, bleach residues, and endocrine disruptors.[PubMed] Several manufacturers are currently facing litigation related to heavy metals found in their products. The regulatory environment around menstrual products is still catching up to what consumers deserve.
The Venus Mat itself is PFAS-free and body-safe — but we encourage everyone to research the full range of products they use and advocate for stronger consumer protections in this space.
Yes. The waterproofing technology in every Venus Mat is American-made, and our quality control is based in the USA. This means we can verify and guarantee the chemical standards our products meet — something overseas manufacturing doesn't allow.
The Cycles of Life
Venus Matters was founded on a different belief: that every body deserves support, dignity, and beauty at every stage of life. The sections that follow honor the full arc — from a daughter's first period to a mother's postpartum body to the pleasure of intimacy to the wisdom of elderhood. You may be here for one chapter or all of them. Either way, you belong here.
Daughters
Menarche is the onset of a girl's first menstrual period — one of the most significant biological and emotional thresholds of a young woman's life. How that moment is received can shape a girl's relationship with her body for years to come.
In too many places and cultures, menstruation is still treated as something shameful, impure, or simply unmentionable. In parts of India, Nepal, and some religious communities, menstruating women are still excluded from their households, temples, or daily life.[WHO] In the United States, nearly a quarter of teenage students have experienced period poverty — unable to afford basic menstrual hygiene products.[Period.org]
Venus Matters envisions a world where every girl feels deeply loved at this threshold. Where menarche is honored, openly discussed, and met with support — not silence.
It is common — studies show that up to 37% of adolescent girls experience heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) during their first cycles.[BMC Women's Health] For some girls, the first period isn't a trickle — it's a flood, sudden and without warning.
Heavy bleeding is not a cause for shame, but it is worth attention. Persistent heavy periods may indicate underlying conditions such as dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, or hormonal imbalance — all of which deserve medical care, not silence.
A Venus Mat on the bed at night means one fewer thing to worry about during this transition.
Free bleeding — choosing not to use internal or external period products and allowing menstrual flow naturally — is practiced for many reasons: comfort, environmental values, bodily autonomy, or simply because it feels right on lighter days.
It's also a legitimate safety consideration. Leaving a tampon in for too long carries a risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare but serious bacterial infection.[NIH] For women who prefer not to use tampons overnight — or who want an alternative on lighter flow days — free bleeding onto a Venus Mat is a comfortable, completely protected option.
The mat absorbs flow directly, protects your mattress completely, and washes clean. No waste, no risk, no worry.
Yes — alongside proper medical care, several approaches have evidence behind them:
Magnesium has been shown to reduce cramps and inflammation. Women with low magnesium are more likely to experience painful periods.[PubMed] Good sources include spinach, almonds, dark chocolate, and pumpkin seeds.
Light movement — walking, gentle yoga, swimming — increases blood flow, reduces stress hormones, and triggers endorphin release.
Anti-inflammatory diet: omega-3-rich foods, leafy greens, ginger, and turmeric may reduce menstrual pain and bloating. Processed foods, excess sugar, and caffeine can worsen inflammation.
Heat therapy relaxes uterine muscles and improves circulation. Ginger tea has been studied as a pain reducer potentially as effective as ibuprofen for some women.[PubMed]
Extreme cramps, nausea, and debilitating pain are not simply "part of being a woman." They deserve medical attention.
Yes. The Bed of Roses Venus Mat was designed with younger girls in mind — beautifully made, joyful, and every bit as protective as our full adult line.
We believe a girl's first experience of her cycle deserves beauty and support, not fear and embarrassment. Menstruation is not a curse. It is a miracle — and so is she.
Mothers
Yes — at multiple stages. Many expectant mothers use Venus Mats in late pregnancy for increased discharge, unexpected leaks, and peace of mind as the due date approaches.
Postpartum, the Venus Mat becomes a quiet essential. Lochia (postpartum bleeding) can be heavy and unpredictable for several weeks. The Mat provides comfortable, dignified mattress protection without the clinical feel of disposable pads — and handles the full reality of early motherhood: postpartum bleeding, nursing leaks, and co-sleeping with a baby, which can be a body-fluid jamboree. Less mess means less laundry, and less laundry means more sleep. We apprecaite this reddit post from the kind folks at r/BabyBumps on the often unseen struggles for new Mamas:
Breast feeding may not work. My son has a tongue tie, and I attempted to breast feed for 4 weeks. It was always painful. It never got better or easier. It destroyed my mental health. Now, I see that combination feeding, pumping, etc is 100% okay! Whatever works for you is BEST. Do not let the pressures of the internet, family, mom influencers, or friends make you feel inadequate if breast feeding doesn’t work for you.
You will bleed. A lot. I was expecting period like bleeding for 10 days or say. I finally stopped bleeding at 5 weeks. It was much lighter at the end, but still. Have lots of pads and adult diapers ready!
Do not feel bad about spending a lot of time in bed. I wanted to immediately go back to pre-delivery activity levels, and I couldn’t do it for weeks. That’s okay. That’s normal. Take care of you and your body so you can take care of your baby ❤️
Your body will feel foreign, but you might not hate it as much as you think you will. I love my mom body now that I’m 6 weeks out.
You don’t have to do it all! Ask for help.
Baby anxiety sucks. You will find yourself constantly wondering if your baby is breathing, eating okay, constipated etc. Yes, check on your baby and bring up concerns you have with your doctor! Trust your instincts! But also remember that the anxiety is normal and will fade."
Childbirth is a major physical, emotional, and social stressor — and yet too many mothers suffer in silence. Venus Matters believes that access to comprehensive postpartum mental health care is not a luxury. It is a human right.
Postpartum depression (PPD) affects approximately 1 in 6 to 8 new mothers.[NIMH] Postpartum psychosis — a more severe condition — affects 1 to 2 in every 1,000 new mothers. Suicide is among the leading causes of maternal mortality in the postpartum period.[ACOG]
If you or someone you know is experiencing postpartum depression or crisis, please contact the Postpartum Support International helpline at 1-800-944-4773.
It is one of the most practical and beautiful gifts a new mother can receive — though it's rarely on any registry because most people haven't discovered it yet. It protects the mattress when a mother's water breaks, provides overnight comfort during postpartum recovery, handles nighttime nursing leaks, and stays useful through the co-sleeping and potty-training years. A Venus Mat lasts a decade. That's a gift that keeps giving.
Pleasure & Intimacy
The following section discusses adult intimacy and sexuality.
Dames
Yes. The menopausal years bring their own set of nighttime realities — night sweats, unexpected breakthrough bleeding, hormonal fluctuations that wake you at 2am. The Venus Mat's breathable, moisture-wicking surface handles all of it quietly, keeping you cool and dry through the night.
More than 1 million women reach menopause in the United States each year.[Menopause Society] This is not a season of life to be managing damp sheets. The Venus Mat is a quiet, lasting comfort.
Yes. The Venus Mat is used by people managing light to moderate incontinence who want dignified, beautiful mattress protection — not the clinical look and feel of medical products. The soft surface feels nothing like a hospital pad, and the 10-year waterproof guarantee makes it a lasting investment in peace of mind.
Completely. The end of fertility is not the end of desire, intimacy, or pleasure. Many women experience a renewed sense of sexual freedom after menopause — liberated from the concern of pregnancy, with a clearer understanding of their own bodies and what they want.
Some women find that hormonal shifts affect libido or comfort during sex, and there are many options — from lubricants to hormone therapy to pelvic floor work — worth exploring with a trusted healthcare provider. Venus Matters because your pleasure matters.
