Celebrating World Menopause Day
Today is World Menopause Day and thankfully, this rite of passage for every human with a womb is finally coming into the light.
Menopause isn’t a disease to cure or a decline to dread.
It’s not the end of a person's beauty, sensuality, or power.
It’s not the end of a person's beauty, sensuality, or power.
It’s a shift—a sacred recalibration of your body, brain, and sleep (more on that below).
Perimenopause, those years leading up to the final period, can begin in your 30s or 40s. The average age of menopause is 50—but some women can still get pregnant in their 50s (just ask Annie Leibovitz, who had a baby at 52!).
When I lived in New York City, Annie and I actually shared the same gynecologist. During my own perimenopausal rollercoaster, that lovely doctor neglected to mention that my suddenly irregular periods weren’t cause for alarm—they were just my procreative powers gracefully winding down.
The truth is: every woman will meet this moment. And that’s something to celebrate.
Three Reasons to Celebrate Menopause:
- No more birth control = freedom, plain and simple.
- No more BS. Each decade we shed what no longer fits—and as my sister used to say: Don’t waste your courage explaining.
- The Grandmother Effect.
Biologists call this an evolutionary advantage. Part of an elite group of organisms (like killer whales and Japanese aphids) only human females live long past our childbearing years because we’re vital to our kin, as protectors, teachers, and wisdom keepers.
As women age, we bring the power of sovereignty to the table.
And that’s why Venus Matters celebrates World Menopause Day.
Whether you’re riding the heat waves or celebrating your sweet sovereignty—sleep cool, dry, and stay divinely uplifted.
